CLEARWATER, Fla. - A Clearwater man is in the hospital with life threatening injuries after police say they were forced to fire at him.
According to authorities, they were called to a house along the 2200 block of Glenmoor Road North to do a welfare check after a family member became concerned about the suspect, 56-year-old Mark Bill.
When officers arrived, they say they found Bill armed with an AR-15 assault rifle. The officers backed away and tried to make contact. We're told Bill then came out and shot at them.
Police said two officers fired back and hit the suspect. He was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center with life threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.
Bill's 15-year old son was inside at the time, but was not hurt. He is being questioned by Clearwater Police.
The officers are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
