Sarasota, Florida -- A sex offender who has been on the run for nearly a quarter of a century is finally behind bars Tuesday.
Authorities say Richard Verboys took off shortly after his conviction of lewd and lascivious battery on a 7-year-old child back in 1988. He was sentenced to probation and court-ordered mental health but took off instead and has been on the run for the past 24 years.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says it developed leads on Verboys whereabouts and forwarded them to the U.S. Marshal Service Middle District on Pennsylvania Task Force who took him into custody today, Jan. 8 in Scranton.
Verboys, 60, will be booked into the Lackawanna County Jail where he will await extradition to Florida.
