Winter Haven Florida-- A Lake Placid man fresh out of prison now faces charges for causing a fatal accident while driving with a suspended license, Polk deputies announced Thursday.
According to reports, 21-year-old Jeffrey A. Harris was released from the Lake City Correctional Facility yesterday, and was on his way back to Lake Placid when his car caused the three-car crash.
A wreck so severe, it reportedly shut down all northbound lanes along a section of US Highway 27 near Winter Haven.
Deputies said Harris' passenger, 20-year-old Suleyka Najera, did not survive the crash, and four other victims were injured.
Harris was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and was reportedly still there Thursday evening under a deputy's watch.
Officials anticipate Harris will be released within the next few days, after which, they said, he'll be taken to the Polk County Jail.
For now, Harris has been formally charged for driving with a suspended or revoked license and causing death, but deputies said additional charges are pending.
