Venice, Florida-- A combination of alcohol and speeding, plus being a police officer -- it all adds up to a resignation for a Venice Police detective.
A Sarasota deputy recently arrested 29-year-old Detective Gaetano Castiglione for excessive speeding, running a red light and driving under the influence. In response, his chief of police gave him the option to resign or be terminated from the force.
His resignation was written simply on a notepad:
"I, Upon my freewill, do choose to resign as a police officer with city of Venice."
"It's a shame from a law enforcement stand point because he had all the right tools to be successful, but like he said to me, 'I did this to myself chief'," said Police Chief Thomas McNulty.
Chief McNulty told 10 News he's disappointed in now former detective Castiglione.
"It was bad judgment," said the chief. "He is a nice guy, a good detective, a good officer- but he used bad judgement."
It began early Friday morning when a Sarasota deputy watched Castiglione speed onto I-75 from Clark and Gantt.
From there, the deputy clocked him speeding twice- once at 63 in a 45, and the other time on the highway at 86 in a 70- that's according to the report filed after the incident.
And the details don't stop there.
The report also says the deputy reached speeds of 130 miles per hour to catch up to Castiglione before he finally started to slow down.
"I think the deputy who made the stop did the right thing. It's unfortunate, you don't want to arrest one of your own, but it was the right thing to do."
The deputy says the officer blew almost twice the legal limit and was uncooperative.
Venice shop owners say Castiglione frequents their stores and is always friendly. Sandy McGowan can't believe he is in this kind of trouble.
"I am sorry he found himself in that circumstance," she said.
According to McGowan, Castiglione recently got married and his former boss says the 29-year-old has a new baby.
