Lake Placid, FL -- The Highland County Sheriff's Office says a 2-year-old boy run over by his mom on a riding mower remains in critical condition. Officials also say Anthony Meza of Lake Placid has undergone an additional surgery today in an attempt to save his injured leg.
Anthony was riding his bike Wednesday afternoon when his mother, 23-year-old Maria Isabel Huerto Bello, accidentally backed over her son as she was on the family's lawn mower.
He was rushed to a local hospital with what officials called "serious injuries." He was later flown to Tampa General Hospital.
"As a mother, I feel terrible and if I could talk to her, I would tell her how much I feel for her and I want to be there for her because I know how much she loves this child," neighbor Geme Eufrancio told reporters.
Anthony Meza is the fourth child in this part of Florida injured by a riding mower this year.
In Hardee County, 4-year-old Makaya Lee injured her leg
after being run over by a riding mower back in July. Just days after
Makaya's accident, 3-year-old John Christopher Fox Jr. of Fort Myers was
also injured after he was accidentally run over by a riding lawn mower.
Before that, 2-year-old Ireland Nugent was seriously injured after her father accidentally ran her over outside their Palm Harbor home.
Nugent lost both of her feet in the accident, and has since been fitted with prosthetic limbs as she continues her recovery.
Nationally the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there are about 34,000 related riding mower incidents treated each year at hospital emergency rooms.
