Gulfport, Florida -- Gulfport resident Charles Lee sent an email to firstname.lastname@example.org stating his concern over the condition of 28th Ave. S. -- the portion connecting 58th St. S. to a condo neighborhood situated between the bay and 59th St. S.
He mentioned potholes, poor drainage, a lack of lane striping, and a potentially dangerous curve in the road.
I contacted Gulfport Public Works, and department Director Don Sopak met Charles and I at the site of the issues, where Don explained that his crew would take care of all of Charles' concerns ... to a point.
It turns out, a portion of 28th Ave. S., which is actually called Bau-hinia Drive west of 58th St. S., has a mystery owner. The City of Gulfport has been trying to discover the identity of the road's owner since the 1970s with no success.
Without ownership, Don explained, there would be a small section of the road where no upgrades could be made. However, he did commit to clearing the clogged street drains, filling the potholes, striping the portion of road owned by the city, and painting a curb frequently clipped by drivers.
The fixes should be completed in the next couple of weeks, at which point 10 News will revisit the area to check in.
