St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg Police have seen a recent increase in people being convinced to buy prepaid credit cards by scam artists.
The suspects are scamming the victims in two ways. In some cases, victims are trying to obtain loans online and are then contacted by the scam artists. The suspects tell the victim to place the money on a prepaid credit card and provide the account numbers to the caller which results in the money being deducted and no loan being provided.
Police have also found that the scam artists will call claiming to be representatives of Duke Energy. They will target victims, usually business owners, and say they have late power bill payments and should purchase prepaid cards and put money on them so their accounts can be credited.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department at (727) 893-7780.
