Largo, Florida -- A suspected gun trafficker was shot by a Pinellas County deputy Friday night on Ulmerton Road.
According to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, deputies were investigating a man, later identified as Anthony Newkirk, who was suspected of drug and gun trafficking. They followed him into the parking lot of the Suburban Extended Stay Motel when the suspect backed into a parking spot in the rear of the motel.
"As he backed into the parking spot, he was approached by deputies and was ordered out of the car," said Sheriff Gualtieri.
The sheriff said that Newkirk disobeyed the order and that's when police decided to act.
"He decided to accelerate forward and reached into his waistband and didn't follow any of the instructions deputies gave him. One of the deputies, Deputy Bill Harding, feared for his safety knowing that Newkirk was armed and not following instructions, reached into his waistband and he fired several times."
Newkirk was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and is in stable condition. No deputies were injured.
Police found two firearms and drugs inside his vehicle.
