Winter Haven, Florida -- A Winter Haven man is in critical condition after suffering a medical emergency while driving around a popular lake in Winter Haven.
The Winter Haven Police Department says the 70-year-old driver struck a Verizon utility pole New Year's Day at approximately 1:40 p.m. while driving on N. Lake Howard Drive NW.
Another driver who was following the vehicle called authorities and stated that the driver of the Thunderbird was driving very slow and erraticly along the lakeside, crossing over into the opposite lane of travel.
The Thunderbird reportedly hit the utility pole off the roadway, causing the pole to fall and resulting in the vehicle crossing back over the roadway and overturning into the opposite lane where the vehicle landed on its roof.
The driver was taken to Winter Haven Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. His name has not been released.
The roadway was closed for four and a half hours. All lanes of travel around Lake Howard are now open.
