Body found in water near St. Pete Pier

UPDATE: The body found floating in the water near Municipal Marina has been identified as 55-year-old Fred Waters, who is homeless.

A witness reported seeing Waters swimming in the water off of Spa Beach at about 10:30 Monday morning and notice about 20 minutes later that he was gone.

Foul play is not suspected, however the Medical Examiner's Office will make a final determination as to the cause of death.


St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found floating in the water near Municipal Marina.

Police say around 12:20 p.m., a passer-by found the body just east of the marina, under the approach to the Pier.

The man has been tentatively identified and his name will be released as soon as of next of kin has been notified.

While the cause and circumstance of death are still under investigation, investigators report there no obvious signs of trauma to the body.
