Brooksville woman charged in newborn's death

Brooksville, Florida -- A 27-year-old Brooksville woman is in jail after she gave birth to a child and placed the child in a plastic bag.

On April 28, Brooksville police and Fire Rescue responded to a home in the 300 block of Union Street after a report of an infant not breathing.

Officers attempted CPR until fire personnel arrived, police said. Soon after, the girl was pronounced dead.

Detectives determined Maria Castillo, the child's mother, had given birth to the child a few hours earlier while taking a shower. She admitted that she failed to notify family or emergency personnel, and had placed the newborn in a bathroom trash bag and took the child into her bedroom.

The child remained in the bag for about an hour, lying on the floor partially covered by clothing to conceal her from view, according to police.

Castillo's family learned of the child's birth and call 911, police said.

Castillo was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child. She is being held at the Hernando County jail on $30,000 bond.
