Cancer survivor leaves law enforcement for restaurant

A former Polk County deputy has embarked on a new career in the restaurant business after twice beating brain cancer, according to the Ledger of Lakeland.

Jim Harmer, 51,  was looking for a new opportunity so he and his wife, Karen, opened a franchise of Lenny's Grill & Subs, a Memphis-based chain.

They had stopped at one of the franchises and were impressed with the food.

Harmer, a former deputy and hostage negotiator, had a change of perspective during a tough time during his nine-year ordeal of treatments and surgeries. He was given precious little time to live.

That’s when he started to look at life differently. He said his priorities shifted.

The new restaurant opened Tuesday at 485 E. Van Fleet Drive in Bartow, adjacent to Lowe’s.
