Child hospitalized in SR 54 crash

Lutz, Florida -- A 5-year-old boy is in serious condition at St. Joseph's Hospital after the car he was riding in was involved in a crash with a deputy's patrol car on SR 54 Tuesday afternoon.

Florida Highway Patrol says the marked patrol car was heading east on SR 54 with its lights on when a minivan attempted to make a left turn onto SR 54 from Oak Grove Blvd and hit the left rear of the patrol car.

The driver of the minivan, 44-year-old Carolann Ruppe and the three other children riding in the van received minor injuries. Evan Ruppe was flown to the hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.

Officer Cindy Guerrero-Gonzalez, 27, was taken to Florida Hospital with minor injuries.

Charges are pending.
