Couple seeking same-sex divorce makes their case in court

Tampa, Florida -- Two women looking for a divorce from each other appeared in front of a Tampa judge on Tuesday.

Judge Laurel Lee says she'll make a ruling in the next two weeks.

Mariama Shaw and Keiba Lynn Shaw married in Massachusetts four years ago, where same-sex marriages are legal. They've reached a divorce agreement, but a judge has questioned whether the court can dissolve a marriage that Florida laws do not recognize.

If they were to get a divorce in Massachusetts, they were told they would have to return to live in that state for at least one year. Attorneys for the couple contend that they should be allowed to separate in Florida, because the state's same-sex marriage ban doesn't specifically prohibit divorce.

Ultimately if Judge Lee does not grant a divorce, the parties involved say they will appeal the decision, taking the case all the way to the Florida Supreme Court if necessary.
