Crash at Mosaic in Polk County ends in one death

Polk County, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's Traffic deputies are investigating a single-vehicle traffic fatality that occurred overnight on Mosaic property.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, two men were trespassing and fishing on Mosaic Property in Bradley Junction when they spotted headlights. The two men jumped into their white Chevy pickup and left the scene. The truck attempted to navigate over a two-foot high berm, but crashed at the bottom.

The driver, John Thomas, was partially ejected from the truck and ended up trapped underneath it. The passenger, Dennis Pate, tried to rescue Thomas but he was unable to so he ran to get help. Mosaic Security found the truck at the base of the embankment about an hour later, but Thomas was deceased.

As deputies responded to the scene, having been contacted by Mosaic Security, Pate flagged down a deputy outside Mosaic property and reported the incident. Pate told the deputy he did not have a cell phone and could not find Thomas' cell phone to report it, and that he ran off of Mosaic property to get help. He voluntarily returned to the scene with the deputy he flagged down.

The investigation is ongoing.
