A news release from Mary Justino with the sheriff's office says Detective David White was shot and killed while approaching a home at 4874 Alligator Blvd. in Middleburg at about 6:25 p.m.
White died on the way to the hospital, the release says.
The 35-year-old narcotics detective was married and left behind two toddlers, Sheriff Rick Beseler said in a news conference.
White had been with the sheriff's office for nine years and served in patrol and detective units before moving to narcotics. Prior to becoming a deputy, Beseler said White was in the Army.
A second deputy, Detective Matt Hanlin, was shot in the upper left arm. According to the news release, Hanlin underwent surgery and is currently in serious, but stable condition. Justino said he is expected to recover.
The detectives were part of a nine-man team that was looking into the suspected meth lab. Almost as soon as White and Hanlin went up to the home's door, a man inside opened fire and hit them both.
After shooting the deputies, the suspect ran to the back of the house, where he was shot by another CCSO deputy. The suspect died at the scene.
Five other men who were inside the home at the time of the shooting were arrested, and Justino said some of them may have been squatting in the house.
FDLE will step in to help out with the meth lab investigation and cleanup, as well as investigate the shooting.
