Tarpon Springs, Florida -- It happened exactly one month before graduation at Tarpon Springs High School. A campaign of vandalism early Monday morning left behind damage across the school.
And by allegedly trashing their school's campus, the three students arrested for the crimes have also trashed their high school accomplishments and -- potentially -- their futures.
Tarpon Springs police say a total of four people were involved in the outburst of destruction.
"Class of 2012" was spray painted all over the place. Two vending machines were busted open. Benches were broken. Police say the lawbreakers even tossed some chairs up on the roof.
Even though the phrase "Class of 2012" was used, the mayhem lacks the key ingredient of a senior prank. A prank requires someone, somewhere may possibly think it's funny.
This appears to be just vandalism, pure and simple.
And expensive. Police estimate the damage done will cost $5,000 to repair. Thanks to education cuts made by the Legislature over the past few years, Florida school districts are already strapped for cash.
Three students have been arrested for the vandalism. Two are adults who face felony criminal mischief charges. The third is not yet 18. That person also faces criminal mischief charges, but not at a felony level.
Police say fourth person was also involved, but in a statement, detectives don't elaborate on the person's role in the crime.
The statement does say the fourth person is not a student at Tarpon Springs High School and has not been arrested at this point.
