Lake Placid, Florida - Two suspects wanted in an armed home invasion robbery from Oct. 27 have been identified and are now behind bars.
Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton says Scott Button and Roy Dampier, Jr. repeatedly beat the victim with a metal pipe who was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Detectives say the pair only got away with a cell phone.
A deputy responding to the initial call was involved in a traffic accident resulting in the death of a pedestrian on U.S. 27 in Lake Placid.
"We are pleased to get these criminals off of the street," said Sheriff Benton. "Our detectives have worked tirelessly to identify and apprehend these violent offenders."
Button, 46, was already in jail on other burglary charges. Dampier, 53, was arrested at a home in Lake Placid. The two men are charged with attempted felony murder, burglary while armed, robbery with a weapon, and tampering with physical evidence. There was no bond until first appearance for either suspect.
