GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - A Lakeland, Florida woman accused of asking her children to kill their North Carolina grandparents made her first court appearance Tuesday morning.

Leticia Silva appeared emotional in court as she asked the judge for more time to see her family.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office tells our news partners at WNCT 9 On Your Side that the 31-year-old made contact with her children in December and asked them to kill their grandparents.  The grandparents live in Pitt County, NC and have permanent custody of the children.

After investigating, deputies say the children revealed Silva had mailed a knife to be used as the weapon in the crime.

Silva turned herself in at the Pitt County Detention Center Monday morning. She's charged with four counts of First-Degree Solicitation to Commit Murder. If convicted, she could face 40 years in prison.

She's under a $5 million secured bond. Her next court date is set for March 21.
