BRADENTON, Florida - Gunfire rang out at a Bradenton apartment complex, coming dangerously close to a playground. It happened Monday night at the Sheridan Place Apartment complex, which is located at 302 26th Avenue West.
Captain Warren Merriman with the Bradenton Police Department says 29-year-old Carlos Alberto Jurado was killed. Homicide detectives scoured the area where his body was found in the parking lot. Jurado has been in trouble with the law before. He served time in prison for aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
Two women who live at the complex spoke to 10 News on the condition that we wouldn't release their names since the gunman has not been arrested. They say they were inside their apartment when they heard the gunfire. They ran outside, because they were worried about the children who are normally playing on the playground.
One woman says Jurado was still breathing when they reached him. She says he took his last breath while they were trying to stop the bleeding. His tank top was ripped off and he had scratches on his left shoulder, she added.
The women say they saw a silver car speeding a way from the scene. Capt. Merriman could not confirm that information, but he did say the man was shot several times in his midsection. He adds that the apartment complex doesn't appear to have a problem with crime.
"It's just like any other place. You can't predict where crime is going to occur. I wouldn't classify it as a high crime area."
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office and Bradenton Police are both investigating the shooting.
