Clearwater, Florida -- A young man was shot around 9:00 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Park Place Apartments at 340 Fairwood Avenue.

The victim, 17-year-old Alvin Toney, was shot several times, according to police. Nearby friends and neighbors say Toney was a high school boy who lived with his parents at the apartment complex.

"He was my friend.  I just saw him two days ago and we joked around," said neighbor and friend Aaron Pasco.

Pasco was one of two neighbors who rushed to help the young man after he was shot.

"I heard one muffled shot then a second loud one.  I looked out my back door and saw him banging on his door, calling for help, but then he grabbed his chest and collapsed.  We ran over to him and saw he was gushing blood from his chest, right near his heart.  I got a sweater from a lady and applied pressure but it was bad," said neighbor Kyle Marks.

The young man was taken by Bayflite air ambulance to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, where he later died, police said.

Police have arrested Trenton Williams in connection with the shooting. They say the shooting was the result of an attempted robbery, where Williams allegedly tried to steal a gun that Toney had for sale. Toney then tried to run and Williams opened fire.

Williams is being charged with first degree murder.
