Damaged Tampa day care opens its doors

Tampa, Florida -- Parents were relieved Tuesday morning to be able to drop off their children at their usual day care.

On Friday, a woman lost control of her car and crashed into The Achievement Center for Early Learning off 46th Street and Busch Blvd.

The car tore a huge hole through the front of the day care and destroyed one of its classrooms. Day care owner Vincent Hernandez and his staff worked through the holiday weekend to clean and prepare to reopen on Tuesday.

"This was horrible, but we powered through the weekend and are so pleased to allow parents to come back and drop their children off here again this morning," said Hernandez.

The Hillsborough County Child Care Facility License department walked through the building Tuesday morning, to make sure the building was still structurally sound for people to be inside and have the certain amount of space needed for each child. Hernandez was prepared, if the department said the building was not deemed safe.

"We are in a tight-knit community," said Hernandez. "I have three or four other day care school centers around that offer their services, if we needed to place those children over there for a day two, or even a week."

Hernandez hopes to have the front of the building repaired in the next several weeks. He estimates the damage could cost him $50,000-$70,000.
