DUI arrest in Hernando with child endangerment charges

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. -- A deputy came into a situation that was thought to be a road rage incident at first glance, around 7 PM on Sept. 16, 2016, on State Road 50 near Sunshine Grove Rd. The driver had gotten out of the vehicle and started laughing and dancing near a pest control vehicle, leading the deputy to be suspicious of possible intoxication.

After pulling the driver over, the deputy saw further signs of intoxication and noticed a small young girl in the back seat. The deputy asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, where multiple bottles of 99 proof watermelon vodka were discovered.

The deputy also discovered marijuana and a marijuana grinder in the vehicle upon further inspection. He has been booked into the Hernando County Jail and has pending charges for DUI and child endangerment.

The driver has been identified as 33-year old, Matthew Gilbert. The father of the child was notified and told authorities that he was aware that Gilbert was taking care of his child and admitted that he was aware that Gilbert "has a lot of issues" and is a "heavy drinker."

Child Protective Services have been contacted and are in the process of doing a further investigation.
