Tampa, Fla. -- Just two months after being hired as the second football coach in USF history, Skip Holtz was where he likes to be in his down time.

He played in a pro-am event at the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook.

"I enjoy golf and I learned it at a very early age," Holtz said. "I do enjoy the game but I don't play it as much as I used to."

Holtz was a single-digit handicap, but his playing time is limited thanks to his full-time job and three kids. What little free time he does have, he'd rather spend it will his wife, Jennifer, sons Trey and Chad, and daughter Hailey.

"I've got (Trey) that loves playing football," Holtz said. "I have (Chad) that is basketball spring, summer and fall. Then I've got a little daughter and all she wants to do is shop, so I've got all the bases covered here."

Part of the allure of the USF job was that both sets of grandparents are within a 90-mile drive of Tampa. Skip's parents are in Orlando, while Jennifer's live in Port Charlotte.

Of course, Lou Holtz is the most well-known. Skip played for his dad in 1986 at Notre Dame before Lou led the Fighting Irish to the national championship two years later.

Skip is frequently asked how he is different from his famous father.  While son credits dad with teaching him right from wrong while growing up, they differ greatly as head coaches.

"He thought you could win a football game without ever throwing a pass," the younger Holtz said. "I'd like to win a football game without ever running the ball."

Both Holtzs had success with their respective approach.  It's just another way that Skip has made his own name in college football.
