FDOT blames contractor for US 19 buckle

Clearwater, Florida -- The Florida Department of Transportation has revealed what caused the overpass at Gulf to Bay and US 19 to sag resulting in two semis hitting the overpass with their roofs on May 7.

FDOT says the contractor, Hubbard Construction, is at fault. FDOT says during the demolition of US 19, concrete chunks fell and became wedged into a space that usually allows the road to expand when it gets hot during the day.

Officials say because the space was blocked, the girder could not expand and caused it to warp.
