Fire rescue responds to hazmat situation in Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida -- The Lakeland Fire Department responded to a Hazmat situation early Sunday morning.

The fire department responded to GTECH Printing located on Frontage Rd S around 7 a.m. after signs of smoke were seen by maintenance employees.

The smoke was determined to be caused by a chemical reaction taking place in a vessel used at the facility to store chemicals used in its printing processes.

The chemical reaction is contained to the vessel and is still currently reacting. Hazmat crews from Polk County are going to join LFD to handle the situation. Chemist and other Hazmat professionals have been consulted to determine the safest and most effective way to control the situation. As of 11:00 a.m., the vessel was being iced down to contain the reaction.

There have been no injuries and everyone in the vicinity, with the exception of emergency responders, have been evacuated as a precaution.
