TAMPA -- A monkey named Ringo and several birds died in a warehouse fire Thursday afternoon at 5828 Barry Rd., adjacent to the Veterans Expressway just south of Waters Avenue. The warehouse also contains chemicals.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue received a call at 2:50 p.m. and upon arrival reported heavy smoke coming from the warehouse. HCFR then called a second alarm for additional manpower after several explosions were heard from inside the warehouse.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol assisted with intermittent closures of the Veterans Expressway due to heavy smoke creating unsafe driving conditions.
Crews needed four hours to completely subdue the fire, with one minor injury reported to a firefighter. They planned to monitor the warehouse overnight to ensure the fire would not rekindle.
The cause of the is under investigation.
