ST. PETERSBURG, Florida — Two people were rescued by the Coast Guard after the 42-foot tug boat they were aboard began taking on water 17 miles west of Aripeka Thursday.
The Coast Guard says crewmember Walter D. Johnson made a mayday call to St. Petersburg watchstanders at 4:40 a.m. The crewemember hailed his GPS position and the name of the tug. After the transmission ended, no further communications were made or established.
A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater arrived on scene at the last known position and saw two people in the water with life jackets donned approximately a half mile southeast of the sinking tug.
The crew rescued both people from the water. They were transported back to the air station in good condition.
The cause of the sinking is under investigation.
