PORT ST. LUCIE — A woman backing her SUV to pick up free coconuts on the roadside ran over a man and injured two others, according to police. The man later died from his injuries.
Everyone was in the area for some of 200 coconuts piled up by a landscape contractor who lives in the 1400 block of Gadsan Avenue.
At other times of the year, the contractor leaves free firewood for people to pick up, said police spokesman Sgt. Robert Vega.
At about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 69-year-old woman was driving by in a GMC SUV and decided to stop.
"As she tried to back up, somehow she ran over a 67-year-old man" and hit two others standing there, looking for coconuts, he said.
Those two were taken to hospitals, as was the driver, who also was injured in the crash. The SUV also hit a car with a child inside. The child didn't need to be taken away for treatment, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.
"We are investigating how this happened," Vega said. The name of the deceased man hasn't been released pending notification of relatives.
The name of the motorist hasn't been released while the investigation continues.
