Lake Mary, FL (WESH) - A bear attack has led to criminal charges against the victim's neighbor. Police say the Florida man was feeding bears outside his house.
Eugene Cifers has pleaded not guilty, but Fish and Wildlife investigators say this photo shows him feeding a bear. They also say they found evidence outside of his house that points to his pattern of behavior.
Cifers denies doing anything wrong. He went before a Seminole County judge, last month, cited with feeding bears in his neighborhood.
Back in April, one of Cifers' neighbors, Terri Frana, was attacked outside her home on bracken-hurst place. "You can see claw marks, so she just missed my eye."
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say while investigating that case, two residents told them they've personally seen Cifers feeding bears. Others claim Cifers has shown them photos of him giving the animals food.
Fish and Wildlife says bears have a keen sense of smell and remember people who have fed them before.
They say this photo is "convincing evidence" Cifers is a repeat offender.
Investigators also say they found "a regularly-used animal trail" leading to his property and a large amount of bear waste on his lawn.
Cifers is fighting the claims against him.
He's hired an attorney and goes back to court, next week.
