MIAMI (AP) - A South Florida man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing three passengers in car crash.
A Miami-Dade County judge sentenced 22-year-old Alberto de Jesus Coteron Oliva on Monday. He was convicted in April of vehicular homicide.
On Monday, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Victoria Brennan sentenced Coterón to 15 years and added 15 years of probation after his prison term is finished.
Authorities say Coteron was hanging out with 17-year-old Veronica Santiago, 15-year-old Isis Maciel Jimenez and 17-year-old Daniel Cardenas in August 2011 at the Dolphin Mall in Doral when the group decided to go for a ride.
At some point that night, Coteron tried to race his 1994 Honda Civic against a black Infiniti. Prosecutors say Coteron was driving around 80 mph before losing control and hitting a light post. The Miami Herald reports that the crash split the car in two.
He later ran from the scene before returning.
"I don't feel any sadness for Alberto Coterón," Melissa Santiago, Verónica's sister, told the judge Friday during the first day of the sentencing hearing. "Because of his lack of responsibility and lack of maturity, he took away a piece of my life."
Defense attorneys argued that Coteron was never going that fast and that another car bumped him off the road.
