Nyad to be grand marshal at Fantasy Fest

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad has accepted an invitation to be the grand marshal of Key West's annual Fantasy Fest parade.

Fantasy Fest officials announced Nyad's intention Wednesday to preside over the decadent costuming and masking festival's highlight event set for Saturday evening, Oct. 26.

On Sept. 2, Nyad completed a 110-mile swim from Cuba to Key West. Despite some skeptics who questioned the legitimacy of her accomplishment, the Key West community has embraced the 64-year-old athlete.

The Fantasy Fest parade is well known for sometimes satirizing current events and controversies. Festival officials wouldn't provide details of the float Nyad is to ride, but confided it would likely be themed around her almost 53-hour swim across the Florida Straits.

The 10-day Fantasy Fest celebration is set for Oct. 18-27.
