Small plane crashes behind north Florida Lowe's

PALATKA, Fla. (AP) - A pilot and passenger were injured when their small plane crashed behind a Lowe's Home Improvement in north Florida.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 2008 Cessna 400 hit the embankment of a retention pond behind the Palatka store late Friday morning. Authorities say the plane's owner and pilot, 73-year-old Richard Carrara, suffered minor injuries, but his passenger, 71-year-old Malcolm Clevenstine, was critically injured. Both men were taken to a Gainesville hospital.

Carrara told investigators that he was attempting to gain altitude from a touch-and-go landing at nearby Kay Larkin Airport when the aircraft's engine stalled.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
