DeLand, Fla. -- Deputies arrested a man who allegedly shot and killed Volusia County Sheriff's Office K-9 deputy 'Forrest."
Forrest was shot around 7:16 p.m. Tuesday when deputies conducted a search for an armed suspect who was hiding in a wooded area. The suspect opened fire, striking Forrest. Deputies returned fire, but the suspect did not surrender and remained in the wooded area through Wednesday morning.
Eddie Durell Powell, 24, was named as a person of interest in the shooting and deputies were working to confirm his identity at the time of the arrest.
According to the Volusia Sheriff's Facebook post, the suspect, believed to be Powell, was hit by gunfire and transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
K-9 Forrest did not survive the night and died at DeLand Animal Hospital.
On Tuesday night, authorities were acting on a Crime Stoppers tip about a fugitive staying at a home on Wing Terrace in Deltona.
A man matching the description in the tip raced past a deputy on a dirt bike after the deputy attempted to stop him. Deputies did not pursue the man but he raced by them again before abandoning the bike.
Residents of the house where the man was staying reported that the suspect jumped over a fence and fled into the wooded area where the fatal shooting took place. Deputies sent Forrest in to locate
