Former co-worker arrested in Lake Alfred killing

Arrest in coach's murder

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says it "got their man." Terry Yelvington was shot dead in the driveway of his  home early Aug. 11 in Lake Alfred. The suspect -- Alfred Ranard Jenkins -- has been arrested and charged with his murder.

Sheriff Grady Judd says this community leader was loved and will be missed.

Lake Alfred Police Chief Art Bodenheime said the arrest of Jenkins was for him bittersweet. "Not only was a resident, a friend, but he coached with me.  It is a happy day, but a sad day," says Bodenheime.

The sheriff's office says Jenkins knew Yelvington as co-workers in the union at Packaging Corporation of America.  Jenkins was the treasurer and Yelvington was the president.

Jenkins was fired in 2011 for stealing money from the union treasury, Yelvington reported the crime and Jenkins was arrested. Judd says, "Terry was doing what was right." Judd says for 5 years anger festered within Jenkins. When the Lake Alfred police arrived on the scene at Terry's home they found him dead.

According to the sheriff's office, Polk detectives served a search warrant Sept. 11 at Jenkins' home and found found a drawstring bag containing rolling papers,  glass smoking pipe and  baggie containing marijuana. Jenkins was arrested for Possession of Marijuana and Paraphernalia. During a post-Miranda interview, Jenkins admitted to knowing Yelvington from PCA, but denied going to Lake Alfred anytime during the previous month.

Detectives interviewed Jenkins' acquaintances, one of whom told them that prior to Jenkins' arrest, Jenkins said the police were "coming after him," and that he was worried about the fact that the police have his truck on video. Jenkins told the acquaintance that he had three firearms: a .380 Beretta, a Remington, and a 12-gauge pump shotgun. Jenkins said he had to get rid of one of the firearms, and that he also "cleaned" it, but he didn't specify which one.

After Jenkins' arrest, he told  the same acquaintance that he (Jenkins) went to Yelvington's home, where he had a physical altercation with the victim in his garage because Yelvington had gotten him fired and arrested and owed him money. Jenkins said then he "went blank." The acquaintance also told detectives that one of Jenkins' girlfriends had Jenkins' guns at her house.

On Jan.  14, detectives served two search warrants and seized ammunition matching shell casings found at the scene of the homicide. They responded to 895 13th Court NE, Winter Haven, and took Jenkins into custody without incident.

Tina Yevington, Terry's wife, says she has lost her best friend. She says they both loved Lake Alfred and especially the young ladies they helped mentor through softball. "I want the same thing that he done to him that he done to my husband. But I don't want him back out," says Yelvington.

Judd is clear what he wants for Jenkins saying, "He needs the death penalty he need to serve the ultimate penalty."

Jenkins was denied bond as he awaits trial. He had a long rap sheet  dating back to 1981 throughout 4 states.
