Funeral service to be held for boy killed by van

Tampa, Florida -- The Cruz Pallares family will be holding a funeral service this Saturday for their son, 9-year-old Jorge Cruz Pallares, who was hit and killed by a van after it veered off a Land O' Lakes road on June 18.

The funeral will be held at the Gonzalez Funeral Home at 7209 N Dale Mabry Hwy in Tampa from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The viewing will start at 11:30 a.m., the service will be held at 12 p.m. and the viewing concludes at 2 p.m.

Jorge was walking his family dog on Bahia Loop with his mother, Anita Pallares, and younger brother, David, when they were hit by John Ryals' van for Precision Appliances. Ryals told FHP there was shade where the family was walking and he did not see them.

Ryals has not been arrested and was ticketed for careless driving, but the family demands justice.

"My boy was courageous. He was outgoing," said Jorge Cruz Sr. "Always willing to help and I miss him a lot. And I want justice."

The family's attorney, Gil Sanchez, suggests there may be design flaws along the road where the family was struck. Sanchez also contends that Ryals should have also been tested for DUI, considering he had just turned 21 the night before.

Anita Pallares has since been released from the hospital, but the family says faces a substantial amount of physical rehabilitation.
