Hemp Fest is a grass root effort for legal medical marijuana

Medical Marijuana Festival

Jermy Gomez has a Guinness World Record for organizing the world's largest food truck rally, but his latest effort -- organizing "Hemp Fest" -- is personal.

"We did this because my daughter has autism and CBD oil can help," Gomez said.

Made from cannabis, CBD oil is a popular form of medical marijuana for children. It has none of the high inducing qualities associated with marijuana. With Election Day just three weeks away, Gomez says this event couldn't come at a better time.

"Hemp Fest is Tampa's medical marijuana awareness fest," Gomez said. "We want to pass Amendment 2 this time and not lose it by two percent of the vote."

An estimated 30,000 people are expected to go to the festival this weekend. Live music and food trucks are the highlights, but several pro-pot organizations are also set up. One thing Gomez says you won't see is actual marijuana.

"This isn't a smoke-fest," Gomez said. "It's still illegal."

Opponents are spending millions to set Amendment 2 up for failure. The latest ad showing edible marijuana that looks like candy, showing how appealing that could be for kids.

"They just don't know better. You can't fault people for not knowing you just got to do everything you can to teach them," Gomez said.

Hemp Fest continues Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Lutz. The address is 19119 Geraci Rd, Tampa, FL, 33558.
