Child killed in Hernando I-75 crash

A chain reaction crash on I-75 near mile marker 302 in Hernando County seriously injured four and left a 9-year-old Riverview boy dead Thursday afternoon, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say traffic was already backed up in the inside lane of northbound I-75 traffic due to an accident further ahead when a 2012 Hyundai driven by Gregory Andriotis, 33, of Deltona, slammed into the back of a 2016 Mazda containing a Riverview family of four. The impact killed 9-year-old Logan Scherer and seriously injured his father, Jordan, mother Brooke and 5-year-old sister Mallory.

Andriotis was also seriously injured. All were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Three other cars in front of the Scherers' vehicle were hit but no one inside was injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
