An armed Weeki Wachee man was shot and killed by Hernando County deputies Thursday afternoon, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s office.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., when, according to initial reports, a healthcare professional notified 911 dispatchers of a possible suicidal person who had numerous weapons inside a residence at 10264 Ridge Top Loop.
Two HCSO officers with training in crisis intervention entered the residence and talked to the man, attempting to defuse the situation. Shortly thereafter, however, shots were fired. The man, Joseph Allen Schlosser, 69, was taken to a trauma center where he was pronounced dead.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation. The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
