Hillsborough deputy shot, manhunt under way

Thonotosassa, Florida -- Hillsborough County deputies are combing the area between Greystone Road and Hershey Road after a fellow deputy was shot around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

A "shots fired" call came into the command center just after midnight from the 9400 block of Greystone Road. When deputies arrived they started to search the area when they came under fire. Forty-two year-old Deputy Scott Ranney was shot in the left thigh and taken to Tampa General Hospital where he was treated and released.

All three deputies that were on the scene returned fire though it's unclear if the suspect was injured, or not.

Greystone Road is currently shut down as deputies continue to search the area. K9, foot patrol deputies, and aviation units are all lending hand in the manhunt. Deputies say the gunman is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Residents at a nearby duplex are being told to use caution as they leave for work this morning.

Deputy Ranney started with Hillsborough County Sheriff Office in 2009 as a detention deputy and later joined patrol units in 2014.
