TAMPA, Florida — The VA confirms auditors were on site in Tampa Monday and Tuesday of last week, and while the findings won't be released until the nationwide review is complete, a spokesperson for the Tampa VA tells 10 News "the audit indicated employees exhibited nothing but passion and dedication to serving our veterans."
But not all local veterans agree.
"What is the VA doing to this soldier? Am I just supposed to die? Am I supposed to hurry up and wait," asked Joseph Kramer. The retired Gulf War Veteran was diagnosed with a growth on his brain back in early March. Two and a half months later, he says he still is waiting for a follow-up appointment with the VA.
"I understand Florida has a lot of Vets," said Kramer. "There's Vets all over the United States, but something has to be done for us."
10 News helped put Kramer in touch with Senator Marco Rubio, who is working to help expedite his care.
"We want to make sure that they move him to the front of the line on an issue of this sensitivity," said Sen. Rubio. "It also reminds us of how many other cases are there like this that we'll never know about because these poor veterans who are struggling just in this case to stay alive and try to figure out their way forward. They have no one to turn to."
We've also learned the Office of Inspector General is also investigating a call that came into their complaint hotline at Tampa's VA. The details of that complaint are not yet available.
On Friday, Congressman David Jolly announced his call for the VA Secretary to allow vets on waiting lists to seek immediate care outside the VA system.
