Tampa, Florida – The last movie theater at University Mall flamed out after only two years, but a new company is hoping a new kind of experience will bring in the crowds.
Studio Movie Grill announced that it will open a new dine-in style movie theater in a 57,000-square-foot second section of the mall by the end of the year.
"We are looking forward to offering not only the best in in-theater dining for local residents, but also to becoming a true partner in the community and providing our new Tampa neighborhood numerous economic opportunities," said Studio Movie Grill Founder/CEO, Brian Schultz.
The University Mall location will be the company's first venture into Florida for Dallas, TX-based Studio Movie Grill, which has 18 locations nationwide.
Unlike your standard movie theater, SMG will offer in-theater dining where severs will bring your food or drink to your seat.
Housing around the mall and the coming movie theater is populated by USF students who have to drive 20 minutes out of their way.
"I would love it because I think that there is no such thing around," said Natalia Soares. "So if you have it right here I wouldn't have to drive like 15 minutes away to go."
The 20-year-old student says she make regular trips to the mall, but only visited the previous movie theater once during her time at the school.
University Mall was a happening spot at for decades, but for years has lost some of its luster.
Most of the parking spaces at the mall were empty and many a major storefronts was vacant when we drove by the facility on Tuesday evening.
SMG will offer high-end dining with a menu that include alcohol beverages, to salads, burgers and smoked ribs.
According to the company website, prices for adults start at $11, which is nearly on par with what you would pay at any other theater.
