Tampa police: Officer shoots, injures man amid attack

TAMPA, Fla. -- A Tampa officer investigating a trespassing call feared for his life and shot a suspect, officials say.

Two officers were dispatched to a house around 5:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, in the area of East 9th Avenue and North 35th Street, where a neighbor complained about seeing two men trespassing at a vacant house, according to a Tampa Police Department news release.

The responding officers came across two men toward the back of the house. Police say one suspect, identified as 68-year-old Daniel Olinger, got into some altercation with one of the officers.

That officer, fearing for his life, fired his gun and hit Olinger, according to the release. The other officer did not fire his weapon.

Olinger's condition is not yet known.

The officer who fired his gun is placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
