How to help victims of Tennessee fires

(WTSP) -- By now you've seen how devastating the wildfires in Tennessee are, and it might make you want to help the first responders and people who live in there.

One way you can help is by donating to the American Red Cross. People can make a $10 donation by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999.

“Hundreds of volunteers came from Tennessee to help us with Hurricane Matthew, and other big disasters we've had in Florida, and we want to do the same for those folks,” Chad Magnuson, executive director of the Red Cross Mid Florida Chapter, said.

The Red Cross has crews in Florida on standby, ready to go to Tennessee. Magnuson said around 1,200 people in Tennessee are staying in their shelters.

“Once the wildfires have kind of settled down and it's safe to return, we'll do an assessment of all the damage that has occurred,” Magnuson explained.

If you want to know exactly where your money's going, you have another option. You can mail a check directly to Pigeon Forge Fire Hall Station 1 at 3229 Rena Street in Pigeon Forge.
