'I just started screaming': Woman awakens to bedroom intruder

A Clearwater woman awakened to an intruder inside her bedroom, but her doorbell camera captured a clear image of his face.

CLEARWATER, Fla. – She opened her eyes to a silhouette standing at the foot of her bed.

As an unknown voice carried through the darkness, she screamed.

"He said to put a pillow over my head," said the woman, who wished to not be identified but  wanted to share her horrifying experience hoping it would help police catch the home intruder. "It's either fight or flight and I just started screaming like there was no tomorrow, like my life depended on it because I think it might've."

A man dressed in all black approached the front door of the woman's home off McMullen Booth Road near Drew Street at about 4 a.m. Saturday.

The man's motions, from walking up to putting on gloves and attempting to open the front door, triggered the homeowner's doorbell camera to start capturing video.

"He doesn’t even try to hide his face and I think that’s the scary part," the woman said.

The video shows the man fiddle with the locked door before walking to a nearby window on the front of the home, which he discovered was cracked open.

The man cut the screen and crawled inside.

The woman says she only woke up because her dog, Charlie, was barking hysterically.

“He barked and growled and would not leave that bed," she recalled.

The 13-year-old pup, which she rescued, was now the one rescuing her.

"Yes, he saved me," she said.

As for the suspect, he ran out through the front door after finding some jewelry and cash, the woman said.

"I don’t want anybody else to go through this and we need to get him off the street now,” she said.

Clearwater police are combing through older footage captured through her doorbell camera to see if they can spot the man in the neighborhood prior to the break-in.

Investigators said the man appeared to be in his mid-to late 40s, standing 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, and weighing about 200 pounds. He had salt and pepper hair and a gray goatee. He was wearing black pants, a black jacket, a black hat and had black-rim glasses.
