It's a coverup! Tampa workers accidentally paint over mural

Oops! City workers mistook a mural in Seminole Heights for graffiti and painted it over.

Oops.

This is what Tampa's very first official "street mural" looked like back in July.

It was supposed to help beautify an intersection along Seminole Height's Rivercrest Park and help slow down traffic.

This, however, is what it looked like on Thursday.

A city worker, mistaking it for graffiti, painted over part of it before the error was discovered.

Stephen Lytle, of the South Seminole Heights Civic Association, said the worker's reaction after being told the mural wasn't graffiti "was a little bit of confusion because he was clearly told it was graffiti based on some report that had him come out here and do it."

The artwork was officially sanctioned by the city, and the community even raised $5,000 to have it painted.

People are confused by how a mistake like this could be made.

"Like how do you not know that it's a mural?"  asked 12-year-old Aida Castelli, who helped paint the mural. "Like the sign was even there."

"They don't fix potholes but they cover murals?" said Bob Holland, who lives near the mural.

City administrators will meet Friday to discuss how to fix this mistake.

"I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it," said City Councilman Mike Suarez. "The first thing we needed to do was to make sure our administration is going to pay for it."

Lytle said there was a bright side to this whole thing.

"This is actually a godsend for us because two weeks after the mural was put in somebody decided to squeal their tires on the mural, so there were tire tracks on it ,and this gives us a chance to bring it back to its original glory."
