Matt Joyce a hit on and off the field

TAMPA, Florida - Even before the Rays played Minnesota on July 8th, Matt Joyce had a full day.

Hours before his team seeks its fifth straight win, the 28-year-old outfielder spent time visiting with some of Tampa General Hospital's youngest patients.

"A smile goes a long way," Joyce said. "To be around these kids and have some laughs, that's what it's all about."

As if a professional athlete wasn't enough of a draw for the kids, Joyce brought along some friends. Fan favorite Raymond made the trip to Tampa General as well, and a local Hess gas station also donated 50 toy trucks to be given out to the kids.

"It shows where [Matt's] heart is," says Jackelin Soto, the mother of Antonio. "It was nice to have someone come and visit because no one has come in here for a long time... except the nurses."

With 14 home runs already this year, Joyce is showing he can make a difference on the field as well. Only about six hours after he left the children's unit, Joyce was in his uniform and ready to go... all in a day's work.
