Clearwater, Florida - Our Pet of the Week is Penny. Penny was found as a stray, but after 4 months, her rescuers could no longer care for her. She is a Beagle that is about 8 years old. It is reported that she spent time with children over 5 years of age and was a very good dog. She even shared her space with other animal species and always minded her manners. She is said to be a great watchdog, loving, loyal and is always mindful of her surroundings.

When Penny arrived, she was in need of a bit of medical treatment. We were able to remove a small, benign growth and also found her to be hypothyroid. Now that she is on medication to regulate that, she should hopefully shed a few pounds. She will need to have a new family that understands her continued need for medical care and daily medication. As long as she has you and her puppy bed to snuggle in, Penny is a happy gal.

Pet of the Week: George

George is a medium sized domestic short haired cat. He has an interesting coat, it is black and white in a tuxedo pattern but his undercoat is white. You can see this by brushing him. He has big eyes and a sweet face. He looks perpetually curious although he is actually a gentle, somewhat quiet boy. He is also declawed in front. He is sociable and sweet who likes to be playful when the mood hits him.

George was brought to the shelter because he had a urinary tract problem. He was treated and is fine now, but because he could form crystals he must stay on a special diet. We feed him Hill's Science Diet c/d at the shelter and he does just fine. He gets along with the other cats in his enclosure but he occasionally likes to stir up trouble. It is all in play. We do not know if he was ever exposed to dogs or children so if you have either at home, please bring them with you to meet George.
