Motorcylist killed in Riverview crash

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday evening when an SUV turned in front of him and he struck the side of the vehicle on Boyette Road in Riverview.

About 6:50 p.m., Brandon Douglas Collett of Ruskin was eastbound on Boyette Road at approximately 70 mph when drove in between two vehicles as he was approaching Balm-Riverview Road, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Alisha Rae Gaffney, 36, of Riverview, was driving a 2017 Nissan Rogue westbound on Boyette and attempted to turn left to go south on Balm-Riverview. She pulled into the path of the motorcycle and Collett struck the passenger side of the Nissan.

Collett, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Gaffney smelled of an alcoholic beverage, according to the sheriff's office, and admitted to having consumed alcohol. She agreed to a blood draw and might be charged based on the toxicology results.
