Neighbors living in fear after Tarpon murder

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- Neighbors have been living in fear in Tarpon Springs after a local doctor was found murdered inside his mansion.

Dr. Steven Schwartz's wife called the Tarpon Springs police after she walked into their home and saw her closet torn apart. She reported a burglary and when the police arrived they found her husband's body near the garage with upper body trauma.

It happened at the end of May at his home at 1310 Belcher Drive off the Anclote River.

The Tarpon Springs community is still waiting for answers.

Police can only reassure neighbors that this was not a random act, but neighbors are starting to doubt this story since there have been no arrests yet.

"Everyone has been on edge, nervous," said Francis Plummer, who lives directly across the street from Dr. Schwartz. She has lived there for 20 years and has never felt more unsafe. "We haven't heard anything. Everyone is still calling each other and checking on each other other, 'Are you ok?' we watch out for each other."

She and her husband watched as police came by the doctor's home again on Monday.

"They tore out two or three doors there at the back of the house, and we thought maybe they had figured out who did it, but they said there's nothing new to tell us, except they did tell my husband this was not going to be a cold case."

Police told 10 News they obtained the door through a search warrant and their detectives are using it for evidence.

The family has put forth a $25,000 reward for any information to solve Dr. Schwartz's murder. That money is separate from the Crime Stoppers Reward.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to call Tarpon Springs Police at 727-938-2849.
